Nhạc khởi động là một phần quen thuộc của hệ điều hành Windows trong nhiều thập kỷ. Đây là lý do khiến nó bị gỡ bỏ cách đây 9 năm.
Trong đoạn video trên YouTube cá nhân, Jensen Harris, cựu Giám đốc Quản lý Chương trình Trải nghiệm Người dùng Windows đã chia sẻ về nhạc khởi động, tiết lộ lý do loại bỏ chúng khỏi các phiên bản Windows mới hơn.
Lý do khiến âm thanh khởi động Windows bị loại bỏ đến từ trải nghiệm của Harris. Vào một đêm, Harris không thể sử dụng laptop bởi ông sợ âm thanh khởi động sẽ ảnh hưởng đến đứa con mới sinh ngủ chung phòng.

“Tôi đã trải qua điều này với chiếc MacBook Pro. Vào một buổi khuya, đến lượt tôi thức dậy để canh chừng đứa con mới sinh. Dù rất muốn sử dụng laptop để duyệt web, tôi không thể nhớ âm lượng trên máy được tắt hay chưa. Khả năng của tôi là 50-50 khi nhấn nút bật máy, âm thanh khởi động có thể đánh thức vợ và con nhỏ. Tôi không thể kiểm soát điều đó”, Harris chia sẻ.
Sợ âm thanh khởi động khiến vợ con thức giấc, Harris quyết định đóng nắp laptop thay vì bật nguồn. Từ đó, Harris nhận ra âm thanh khởi động là tính năng tồi tệ trên một thiết bị được thiết kế để sử dụng trong không gian riêng tư, gần với mọi người cả ngày lẫn đêm.
“Do đó, tôi yêu cầu đội ngũ loại bỏ âm thanh khởi động khỏi Windows 8”, Harris chia sẻ trong video. Như vậy, Windows 7 là phiên bản cuối cùng sử dụng nhạc khởi động.
Xuất hiện lần đầu từ Windows 3.1, nhạc khởi động là một trong những tính năng đặc trưng của hệ điều hành, được phát khi thiết bị đã sẵn sàng để sử dụng. Mỗi phiên bản Windows có một âm thanh khởi động khác nhau.

Do tồn tại trong thời gian dài và được phát mỗi khi bật máy tính, âm thanh khởi động đã trở thành thứ quen thuộc của người dùng Windows. Tuy nhiên, nó đã bị loại bỏ từ phiên bản Windows 8 ra mắt năm 2012.
Quyết định trên từng khiến Harris hối hận. Microsoft đã thực sự tạo ra âm thanh khởi động cho Windows 8, nhưng đã loại bỏ để hệ điều hành khởi động nhanh hơn. Harris hứa sẽ tiết lộ âm thanh khởi động của Windows 8 trong các video sắp tới.
Ngoài lý do loại bỏ nhạc khởi động trên Windows, video của Harris còn chia sẻ nhiều thông tin thú vị về lịch sử âm thanh trên máy tính, kể cả việc tablet Surface được Microsoft bắt tay phát triển từ năm 2008 khi nhận thấy người dùng laptop ngày càng di chuyển nhiều.
